Firebirds Majul named PHL Pointstreak Peak Performer

December 13, 2011

The North American Prospects Hockey League (PHL) announced its Pointstreak Peak Performer from the PHL 18U event held earlier this month.  The player was selected based upon his performance at the third PHL event of the season, which concluded December 4th at the Darien Sportsplex in Darien, Illinois.

MIDGET MAJOR (18U) POINTSTREAK PEAK PERFORMER-Hector Majul, forward, Phoenix Firebirds

Hector Majul, 17, has been selected as the Pointstreak Peak Performer from the PHL event held in Darien, Illinois earlier this month.  The Mexico City, Mexico native helped his Phoenix Firebirds go undefeated with a perfect 4-0-0 record at the PHL event in Darien and help Phoenix climb all the way to 7th place in the 18U standings with an 8-5-0 record

In the four games in Darien, Majul registered seven points in four games.  All of Majul’s seven points were goals.  Majul (5’10/175) is currently tied for 2nd in the PHL’s 18U Division with 10 goals this season and is tied for 1st in game-winning goals with three.  He started off the event by registering a goal in the Firebirds 4-3 win over the West Michigan Hounds.  The next day, Majul registered a hat-trick, which included the game-winning goal, in a convincing 6-0 win over the Indiana Jr. Ice.  On Sunday, Majul scored his second straight game-winning goal in a 3-1 win over the Texas Tornado.  Later that afternoon, he had two more goals in a 5-2 win over Orange County.

Majul’s story of coming to the Firebirds and playing in the PHL is an interesting and intriguing one.  Just five years ago, Majul was living and playing hockey in Mexico City, Mexico when he was noticed and had the opportunity to come to the United States and take his game to the next level.  “Very few people know that Hector is actually a world-class soccer player for his age,” said Phoenix 18U head coach Todd Collins.  “He could easily get a scholarship to play college soccer, but his first love is hockey.  Since coming to play for us four years ago, his improvement level is off the charts.  I think his hand/eye coordination in soccer has benefitted his game on the ice because he has great hands and a natural scoring touch.  He just understands how to see and get around on the rink.”

However, it is Majul’s speed and ability to find the back of the net that has caught the eye of junior scouts.  “I think the thing that stands out most is his speed.  He is a world-class skater,” said Collins.  “He has worked very hard over the last couple of seasons to develop that speed an turn it into scoring chances.”  His performance in Darien was so good that the North American Hockey League’s (NAHL) Texas Tornado signed Majul to a tender just this past week to play in the NAHL next season.  “It is an incredible opportunity for him and well-deserved,” continued Collins.  “He plays on a great line and all those guys really stepped their game up in Darien and as a result, that entire line has signed tenders to play in the NAHL.”

Thanks to the undefeated weekend in Darien, Collins said that the Firebirds have found their stride and are eager to keep the momentum going at the PHL’s fourth event of the season in Dallas, Texas, December 28-31.  “I think the first couple events, we wanted to make sure all the players got an opportunity to play and show us what they could do in different situations,” remarked Collins.  “Once we got an idea of who could use on special teams and who would work best in line combinations, this team started to really gel.  Hopefully we can keep it going and try and finish in the Top 8 to give ourselves a chance in the PHL Championship series in February, but more importantly our players are developing and getting the opportunity to play at the next level.”
