NAPHL event packed full of exciting action in Day 2

The third event of the 2019-20 NAPHL season continued on Saturday as the Elite and Prep Division teams made their event debut and the Showcase Division continued their play. Over 40 scouts have checked in the first two days to watch the action at the Super Rink in Blaine, Minnesota, which included scouts from the NCAA, NAHL, and USHL. The event continues with Day 3 on Sunday.

This weekend’s event features the 18U and 16U Elite Division teams, along with the Prep Division and the debut of the 18U, 16U and 14U Showcase Divisions.

Day 2 recaps:
 
14U Division 
Shutouts again dominated the 14U scene on Saturday, as four of six games ended with a zero on one side of the scoreboard. 
 
The Dallas Penguins kept their perfect start intact with a 5-0 win over Ontario on the back of Hank Himmerle’s effort in net, followed by Noah Merrick backstopping South Florida to a shutout over Atlanta, Blake Craven carrying Janesville to a 10-0 win and Geneva knocking off Arizona 3-0 with Jack Houck in goal.
 
Elsewhere, McKinney erupted for a 6-2 win over Nashville and Janesville topped Chicago Jets 4-2 to close out the day. 
 
16U Division
The 16U action was also highlighted by impressive goaltending, with shutouts dominating shorelines throughout the day. 
 
Northern Express blanked Texas 4-0, Geneva topped Central Florida 7-0, Chicago Jets nabbed a 3-0 win over McKinney, Minnesota Magicians steamrolled Arizona Mission 8-0, Orland Park blanked Park City 6-0, Arizona Bobcats shut down MyEdge 5-0 and Littleton took a 5-0 win over Nashville in the goose egg games. 
 
The remaining 18U games featured plenty of offense, starting with West Dundee knocking off Clearwater Ice Storm 4-1, Chicago Hawks scraping past Vegas 2-1, Chesterfield outlasting Lansing 5-3 and Highland Park topping DYHA 4-2 in the earlier contests. 
 
Later, Naperville knocked off Ontario 4-1, Arizona took a tight 2-1 win over Magicians Elite in overtime, Florida Alliance breezed past MyEdge 8-1 and Sylvania took down Colorado Springs 8-1 as they entered the fray for the first time this weekend. 
 
18U Division
Competition heated up in a big way on Saturday, as 18U teams throughout the day locked horns in several close contests. Magicians Elite opened the day with a 6-4 win over Colorado Springs, followed by a pair of 2-1 wins — Ontario over POE and IHA Calgary over Shattuck St. Mary’s in overtime — and a pair of 1-0 wins — Chicago Hawks over Arizona Hockey Union and Thunder Bay over the Wilderness.
 
From there, Littleton topped TRC 5-2, Green Bay won the battle of the Bobcats against Arizona 2-1, Des Moines escaped with a 3-2 win against Florida Alliance, Highland Park coasted to a 9-1 win over Clearwater Ice Storm, West Dundee held off the Magicians just enough for a wild 8-7 victory, Naperville beat Park City 2-1 in a shootout and Janesville edged Portland 3-2 to finish off the earlier games. 
 
Later on, Chicago blanked South Florida 3-0, Vernon Hills eclipsed Hyland Hills 5-2, McKinney shut down Orland Park 3-0, Arizona Mission beat Affton 2-1, Dallas Penguins earned a 3-2 comeback win in overtime against Chesterfield and Anaheim took down Geneva 5-3. 
 
Capping off the day, Des Moines held off Arizona Bobcats 2-1, the Wilderness toppled Colorado Springs 3-2 in a shootout, Thunder Bay snagged a 4-3 OT win over Magicians Elite, POE rode a pair of two-goal efforts to a 5-2 win over Florida Alliance, IHA Calgary outlasted Ontario 3-2, Portland salvaged a split on the day with a 4-2 win over Green Bay and Janesville stayed perfect with a 2-1 win over Shattuck St. Mary’s. 
 
Prep Division
The NAPHL Prep division hit the ice for the first time this season on Saturday, and defending champions Northstar Prep picked back up right where they left off, topping Regis Jesuit 6-0 and IHA Florida 8-1 to kick off their title defense. Elsewhere in the early block, St. Mary’s picked up a 2-1 win over St. Rita, Pacific Ridge opened their account by beating Tampa EDP 6-3, Pilot Mound shut down Tahoe for a 5-0 win, Fountain Valley knocked off IHA Florida 3-0, Prairie topped Fernie 3-2 and Valor outpaced IHA Calgary Varsity 4-2. 
 
Later in the day, Pilot Mound, Pacific Ridge Prairie and Valor stayed perfect with wins over Fernie, Fountain Valley, Tampa EDP and St. Rita, while Tahoe and Regis tallied their first W’s, dispatching IHA Calgary Varsity and St. Mary’s to close out the day’s Prep action.
