Upsets in Gold Division on Day 2 set up Super Sunday

Madison Capitols 16U goalie Eli Bowers made 19 saves for the shutout as the Capitols moved to the top of the standings with a 3-0 win over Sioux Falls on Saturday.

Through two days of the 2018 NAPHL Dixon Cup Championship, the Semi-Final spots in the 18U and 16U Gold Divisions remain up for grabs heading into Day 3 of the event on Sunday.

Day 3 is on Sunday, February 18th and features the final games of round-robin play. The Dixon Cup annually crowns the playoff champions of the NAPHL.
 
All NAPHL 18U and 16U teams are competing in this weekend's event, with Championships being decided in the Gold (Championship) and Silver (Consolation) Divisions. All four NAPHL Championship games will be played on Monday morning, February 19th at the Troy Sports Center.

18U Gold Division
In Gold Division 1, CarShield moved to 2-0 thanks to a 4-2 win over Meijer. Four different players scored for CarShield in the win and goalie Kyle McClellan made 35 saves in the win. Meijer fell to 0-2 in round-robin play and had a goal and an assist in the loss. In the other Gold Division 1 game, the Tampa Scorpions rebounded with a 6-4 win over the Valley Forge Minutemen. Six different players scored for the Scorpions, including Peter Morgan, who had a goal and two assists and Brennan McDonnell, who had a goal and an assist. Both teams are now 1-1. In Division 2, the Rocky Mountain RoughRiders sit atop of the standings after two days with a 2-0 record as they picked up a 4-2 win on Day 2 over Elite Hockey. Four different players scored in the win and Kevin Ness had three assists. Gus Aldridge had both goals for Elite in the loss, as Elite fell to 0-2. In the other Division 2 game, the Esmark Stars played their way back into the tournament with a 6-2 win over Sioux Falls, moving both teams to 1-1 in the event. Nicholas Carretta had two goals and Andre Murphy and Oldrich Virag had three points in the win.

16U Gold Division
In the Gold Division 1 16U Championship, Meijer AAA won their first game of the event as the jumped out to a 4-0 lead and withstood a furious Everett comeback to win 4-3, knocking off the #1-seeded Silvertips Elite. Luke Anderson and Connor Williams each had a goal and an assist in the win. In the other Division 1 game, Madison Capitols 16U goalie Eli Bowers made 19 saves for the shutout as the Capitols moved to the top of the standings with a 3-0 win over Sioux Falls. The Capitols got goals from Richard Indermill, Simon Ellingson, and Sean Sullivan. In Division 2, the #2-seeded Esmark Stars fell to CarShield AAA by a scored of 2-1. CarShield got 31 saves from Grady Reis in the win and Colton Walpert and Jack Estes each had a goal and an assist. In the other Division 2 game, the Rocky Mountain RoughRiders clawed back from a 3-0 deficit to ultimately defeat the Arizona Bobcats in a shootout, 4-3. Trace Norwell had the shootout winning goal and an assist in the game. Brent Keefer also had a goal and an assist for the RoughRiders, who move to the top of the standings with five points in the win.

18U Silver Division
In the Silver Division A, the Wenatchee Wolves have punched their ticket to Monday’s Consolation Championship game thanks to a 3-0 record through the first two days, which included a 5-1 win over California on Saturday. Wenatchee is four points clear of the next closest team in the division, the Thunder Bay Kings, who have five points. Everett Silvertips Elite is the only team completing their four games with a 1-2-1 record and four points. The remaining four teams finish their fourth and final round-robin games on Sunday with Wenatchee already headed to Monday’s final. In Division B, it will be a winner-take-all Sunday as the undefeated Madison Capitols square off against the undefeated Pursuit of Excellence.  Madison has three regulation wins and nine points and POE has two regulation wins and a shootout win for eight points. The winner of the game regardless of regulation, overtime or shootout will advance to Monday’s final to face Wenatchee. Shattuck-St. Mary’s completed the event at 0-3-1, while Dallas and Colorado Springs will meet on Sunday in their final games, each with 1-2 records.
 
16U Silver Division
Division A, which only has four teams, finished up round-robin play on Saturday, with the Washington Little Caps claiming the #1 seed and spot in the Semi-Finals thanks to a 3-2 win over Pursuit of Excellence in the morning and a 5-1 win over Colorado Springs in the afternoon. The Little Caps will take on the Dallas Blackhawks Elite in the Semi-Final, as Dallas picked up a 5-4 shootout win over Colorado Springs in the morning, and 3-2 win over Pursuit of Excellence in the afternoon and finished with five points and in 2nd place in the Division. The 3rd and 4th place consolation game on Sunday will feature the Colorado Springs Tigers (4 points) against Pursuit of Excellence (1 point). In Division B, which features five teams, the Thunder Bay Kings remain the only undefeated team at 2-0 thanks to a 5-0 win over the Cal Titans in the morning. Valley Forge moved into 2nd place at 2-1 thanks to a 3-1 win over Elite Hockey. Shattuck-St. Mary’s got their first win of the event thanks to a 4-1 win over the Cal Titans. As a reminder, the winner of the pool advances to Monday’s consolation championship game against the winner of the Washington vs. Dallas semi-final.
