Minot defenseman Brandt makes NCAA DI commitment

December 15, 2015

By Ken Oda, Minot Minotauros

The Minot Minotauros, proud members of the NAHL, are pleased to announce that team captain Jared Brandt has committed to play NCAA Division I hockey at Miami University. Brandt will head to Oxford, OH, to start his college career next fall. Miami is a member of the National Collegiate Hockey Conference (NCHC).

Brandt, 20, is in his third season with the Minotauros and has posted a goal and 10 assists through 28 games played. For his career with the Minotauros, Brandt has four goals and 26 assists in 118 games since 2013. Brandt’s 91 shots on goal this year rank 10th among defensemen in the NAHL. Brandt’s 118 games played as a Minotauro are tied with Matt Audette for the third most in franchise history. If Brandt plays at least 23 of the Tauros remaining 32 games he will pass Tim Donohue for second all-time.

The native of St. Peters, Missouri is another true ladder of development story.  Prior to coming to the NAHL, Brandt (5’11/195) played three seasons for the St. Louis Selects in the NAPHL. He spent the 2010-11 and 2011-12 seasons playing for the Selects 16U teams and then the 2012-13 season playing for the Selects 18U team.

Brandt also played in the 2013 NAPHL Top Prospects Tournament, which was held in Frisco, Texas during the Spring of 2013. He then signed a tender to play for Minot the following season and the rest is developmental history.

Minot Head Coach Marty Murray praised Brandt’s work ethic. “Jared is a great story as he came in from the NAPHL, battled his way through and his consistency got him to this point. Last season he developed into a top defenseman in our league and he proved it at the Showcase where he stood out.”

Brandt said he chose Miami because of several reasons. “Miami is one of the premier programs in college hockey and they are close to home. I want to thank the Minotauros coaching staff with helping me achieve his goal. I also want to thank my billet family, teammates and of course my family.”

Brandt will be reunited with former Minotauro Scott Dornbrock who is currently a sophomore at Miami University. The duo were teammates in Minot during Brandt’s rookie year. “I called him yesterday and it will be good to play with him again and go in knowing someone already,” Brandt said.

Brandt becomes the 14th Minotauros player to commit to playing NCAA DI hockey. He is the second this season after Johnny Walker committed to Arizona State in October.
