Anaheim 18U forward and captain Barriga signs NAHL tender

December 7, 2013
The Anaheim Jr. Ducks, members of the North American Prospects Hockey League (NAPHL), have announced that 18U forward and team captain Elijiah Barriga has signed an NAHL tender with the Amarillo Bulls.  The Bulls are the defending Robertson Cup National Champions and members of the NAHL’s South Division.

The 17-year-old from West Covina, California has been a one-man scoring crew this season, following up on his great season last year for Anaheim at the 16U level. At the most recent NAPHL 18U event in Romeoville, Illinois, Barriga (5’11/190) led all NAPHL 18U scorers during the three days as he totaled 12 points (3 goals, 9 assists) in just four games, on his way to being named the event’s Peak Offensive Performer.

For the 2013-14 season, Barriga is the leading scorer in the NAPHL 18U Division with 29 points, which includes a league-leading 20 assists and nine goals.

Last season with the Anaheim Jr. Ducks 16U team, Barriga was named as the 16U Peak Performer for October 2012 and ended up being selected to the All-NAPHL 16U 3rd Team.

“Elijiah has really adapted to the 18U level in a short matter of time,” said Anaheim 18U head coach Larry Barron. “I think he does a great job of producing offense for himself and his teammates.  Elijiah has a very strong hockey IQ and he makes very good decisions with the puck. He sees the ice so well and usually makes the right decision, whether it is to pass or to shoot.”

Barriga also tendered with the Bulls last season and he becomes the first player from this year’s 1st place Anaheim Jr. Ducks 18U team to sign an NAHL tender this season.

To date, 17 NAPHL players have signed NAHL tenders for the 2013-14 season.

A tender is a contract, of sorts, a player signs announcing his intentions to play for that particular NAHL team and that NAHL team only. Once a player signs a tender with an NAHL team, his playing rights belong to that team within the NAHL and he may not be recruited by any other NAHL team. Each team is granted ten (10) tenders, which include two (2) tenders exclusively used on players from the NAPHL - plus or minus any trades - which become active on Nov. 1. Tendered players are not eligible for the NAHL draft, which will be held on June 3, 2014.
